How BlackHat fakes Google PageRank
I came across a blog entry this evening talking about how to fake Google PageRank. I do not recommend trying this but thought people and "SEO Clients" would be interested is seeing how it used to be done. Why are you showing how this is done? My reason is because internet advertising space and link building activities key selling point is how much Google PageRank does this page have that your link will reside. I will later in this post show you ways to check to make sure that your prospected advertising site does in fact have the P R they are telling you they have.
Developers who want to fake Google PR steps:
- First they will setup a redirect via a .htaccess file or php code using a 301 redirect to a domain with the desired page rank (a high one of course). It’s better to redirect to content thats relevant so I’ve read. For example, if you are doing an insurance site, redirect to an insurance site that has very high PR.
here is a php code sample:
"I’m working on how to get code snipets into wordpress properly
so checkback so do a trackback or subscribe."
- Those doing this would place this code on a site they own that gets spidered regularly by Google. Google PR can be read by using the Google or Alexa Tool Bar.
- Then they wait for the next Google update. Google Updates typically happen about once every three months.
- Now that Google thinks the site has moved to a different domain, the developer will now want to be cloaking. He does this by continuing to redirect the Google bots to the site the has high page rank, but if a real internet surfer comes along, direct them to the real site.
Again, I don’t recommend doing this mainly because all your doing is passing all PageRank for the life of your site to the site that already has the high PageRank. Not to mention if a person has sold advertising space to someone who finds out their PR is bogus …well I know I would be pretty upset.
How do I check if Google PageRank is being faked?
An easy way to check is to go to google.com and search the following. Say the prospect domain for advertising on is insurancebiz.com. So within the Google search field search for this: "link:www.insurancebiz.com".Look very carefully at the results. Go ahead and click on one of the sites and examine the site for the link that Google has registered. Try examing a few more of the listed sites as well. If you can’t find any of the links that Google states are registered, well then you have it. They are using methods like those shown above to FAKE Google PR.
