Key areas of difference between personal and corporate blogging

By Troy Perkins on 31 July 2007

Writing online has become a new genre of literature, and is called blogging. A Blog is a website entry that is written chronologically and displayed in an inverse chronological order. Unlike other formal types of writing, a blog is written from an informal point of view where the person writing the blog can use an informal format of language. Blog writing involves presenting an idea about a product or a particular type of philosophy which involves promoting the product. Moreover it is the freedom of expression that one needs to notice while writing a blog for personal or corporate reasons.

Personal blogs are divided into different types which include travel, fashion, political and project blogs. The content of a personal blog doesn’t have to be formal since it is a personal point of view. The blogger may research the content of the topic from various websites so as to present his ideas with some authentication. However the main criteria of writing the personal blog are passed creativity.

A personal blogger can make his content interesting if he uses criticism against a particular institution or an idea that he dislikes. This is the essential characteristic of personal blogs as they are strongly opinionated. It is because of this characteristic that a personal blog has to bring in the reader into the overall span of his writing; this can only be done with strong opinionated ideas. An individual point of view is presented with his personal experience that he has undergone, which enable the reader to share the experience. For example if the blogger is writing on popular tourist attractions in San Francisco, then he would include his personal experience, which would elaborate on the price of different locations and hotels to stay in.

In contrast to personal blogs, the corporate blog have to promote a particular brand or idea. This means that the blogger doesn’t have enough freedom of expression as there is a particular stream of writing that the blogger has to follow. The writing style should be formal with no grammatical or syntactical errors.

Apart from the structure of the article, the blogger has to keep the aims of the client in mind. The suggestions of the client have to be the main priority for the blogger as he has to include the keywords that are specified by the client. In contrast to personal blogs, the blogger has to research the content for the corporate blogs with greater accuracy. Since the blogger is going to be promoting the clients idea it is necessary not to use any informal set of keywords as this won’t set the formal tone of the article. However, it is essential that the blogger use the set of keywords that are prescribed by the client so as to optimize the blog for better search results.

Therefore in terms of creativity and freedom of expression personal blogs stand far ahead of corporate blogs, which many bloggers prefer to write.
